This year’s Ukraine’s Person of the Year for social and political activity was awarded to Maltese President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca.
This award is given to outstanding representatives of politics, culture, and arts to strengthen Ukraine’s independence, supporting and promoting Ukraine, its people, history, and traditions.
Previous recipients include Pope John Paul II, former EU foreign policy high representative Javier Solana, and U.S. Senator John McCain.
President Coleiro Preca expressed her gratitude and said she was confident ties between Malta and Ukraine would grow more robust in the years to come. She noted that Malta’s EU Council presidency during 2017 was instrumental in finalizing a visa liberalization deal between the EU and Ukraine.
The Maltese President explained that since the independence of Ukraine in 1991, relations have flourished between the two countries. These relations have grown at all levels. Her recent state visit to your country has further consolidated the excellent bilateral relationship between the authorities and the peoples of both countries.
The latest state visit occurred in Kiev on the 17th of October to meet with the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and attend the Ukrainian-Maltese business forum.
The Maltese President said that the presence of a strong and diverse trade delegation in Ukraine shows just how determined the Maltese authorities and businesses are to pursue closer collaboration between our authorities and business communities. Malta is committed to ensuring that they grow and prosper together.
On the other hand, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, said that there are ongoing talks on opening a logistics centre for Antonov, the Ukrainian state aircraft manufacturer, in Malta. Africa is one of the continents that Antonov exports to and wishes to take advantage of the European state’s proximity to the continent.
This project was initially discussed during Poroshenko’s last Malta visit in May 2017. Poroshenko concluded that the ideal place to establish a hub for spare parts provision and maintenance might be Malta.
