Any individual born in Malta is automatically a citizen of Malta on the date of his or her birth if, at the time of birth, at least one of the individual’s parents is a citizen of Malta.
A person born outside of Malta may be a citizen of Malta at the date of his or her birth if one of the parents is a citizen of Malta. If such person can prove that he or she is a descendant in the direct line of an ascendant born in Malta, such person may be entitled to apply for citizenship in Malta.
There are certain requirements that have to be fulfilled in order to acquire citizenship by birth and the date of birth of such individual should be taken into consideration.
