What do I need to get a Maltese Passport in Australia?

The main prerequisite to getting a Maltese Passport in Australia is that you hold Maltese citizenship. If you are a Maltese citizen and have an expired passport, you will simply need to book an appointment at the nearest consulate and renew the said passport.

In all cases of issuance of Maltese passports, (Enquiry Form A) must be filled out.

More than likely, if you are reading this article, you are an Australian Maltese by descent and will need to apply for citizenship (link to above article).

Once you have been granted citizenship, you can apply for a passport.

Maltese passports are biometric and issued by the Passport Office in Malta. They are not made in Australia and will have to be sent over.

You should call your nearest consulate in advance to book an appointment.

When applying for a Maltese passport, you must submit for fingerprinting, sit for a photograph onsite and provide your signature at the nearest consulate.

This biometric data is then sent to Malta.

If the applicant is aged over 18, they must apply in person and present a valid form of identification such as a driver’s licence or a passport.

Minors aged between 6 and 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the consulate. In this case pay special attention to sections 7 and 8 of Form A. Two photographs signed by a recommender (Justice of the Peace etc.) must be provided by the same recommender who filled in the form.

For children aged between 0 and 6, the same as above applies, but they need not be in attendance. Parents should take their own passports with them.

If you are Australian born and applied for citizenship, then you must provide your certificate or letter of citizenship of Malta when applying for a passport.

You will also need to provide a certified photograph.

There is an additional Courier Fee of €20.

An administration fee of €10 applies for each passport application submitted.
