From its start in 2014 to date, the Maltese Citizenship by Investment Programme has proven to be very successful, providing a second passport option to individuals and families. With Malta being a member of the European Union, Maltese Citizenship grants numerous investment opportunities both local and throughout the other member countries. The Malta Individual Investor Programme (MIIP) allows for foreign individuals of good standing to be granted Maltese Citizenship on the basis of certain requirements.
Can I obtain a Maltese Passport?
To obtain Citizenship and ultimately a Maltese passport there are certain requirements. The Main Applicant must be at least 18 years of age and of good standing. The Government runs enhanced due diligence checks which ensure that only reputable applicants obtain a Maltese passport. It is possible to add dependants such as spouse, children, parents or grandparents to the application depending on certain conditions. Applicants will also be required to have an international private health insurance in addition to the three Financial requirements: A contribution to the development of Malta, the purchase of stocks/bonds and Rental or Purchase of Property.
A. Contribution to the Development of Malta
The Main Applicant is required to contribute at least €650,000 to the State, whereas spouses and children are required to contribute €25,000 each to the State. Dependants between 18 and 25 and dependant parents must contribute €50,000 each to the State.
B. Purchase of Stocks/Bonds
The Main Applicant is required to invest at least €150,000 in Government approved stocks/bonds and these must be kept for a minimum of 5 years.
C. Rental or Purchase of Property in Malta
Applicants are required to purchase or rent a property in Malta. The property rental minimum per annum is €16,200 whereas the property purchase minimum is €350,000.
The Main Applicant is required to provide genuine links with the Maltese Islands. Applicants are also required to be residents in Malta for 12 months and must commit to a minimum physical presence prior to receiving Citizenship. Usually it is expected that in most of the cases the whole process will take 12 months. Notification for all accepted applications is communicated to the Accredited Agent explaining applicants have gone through the due diligence process and have been deemed to be acceptable.
